Welcome to my first proper allotment vlog. In this video I show you around my new allotment for the first time and begin some early work by planting raspberry canes into the ground. This is the start of my allotment journey and I’m excited to share how I’m setting things up from the very beginning.
After a recent storm I visit the allotment to see how wet the ground is and how the plot is looking in winter. The soil is muddy and heavy clay, but not as waterlogged as expected.
I show the shed we recently built and walk around the plot, sharing first impressions and honest observations of the winter conditions.
I talk about my plans for building a compost heap from pallets and creating simple pathways using wood chip and pallets to make the plot more accessible.
Along the edge of the plot I plan to plant raspberries and verbena to create a flowering border and make good use of the space.
Despite the challenging soil conditions, I begin planting raspberry canes along the side of the plot. The clay soil is lumpy and compacted, making the job slow and physically demanding.
While digging I discover bindweed roots and an unexpected membrane in the ground, which raises questions about what was previously growing in this area.
Once the raspberries are planted, I mulch them with wood chip to protect them through the rest of winter.
At the end of the day I share reflections on allotment life, working in heavy clay soil and taking the first steps on this new gardening journey.
